Sony’s strategy for the PlayStation 5 is simple: the company release a heavyweight console, but with a second digital edition in PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, make a lot of PlayStation exclusive games, tie-up with other studios to get more, then sell them separately (at a premium) instead of as part of any subscription like Microsoft’s Xbox Game Pass.

This strategy is hard to dispute. The strategy worked so well that the PlayStation 4 sold more than twice as many units as the Xbox One. Sony is the market leader in console gaming and it doesn’t intend to challenge the apple cart. Although it isn’t interested in other models that appeal to all types of consumers, the PS5 isn’t a weak product. It can easily compete with Series S and Series X, Xbox Series X.

Although native 4K resolution gaming is possible at 60 frames per second (fps) on the PS5, it appears that not all first-party Sony titles will be able to do so. Sony claims that you can go up to 8K resolution or 120fps if you have the right hardware. The PlayStation 5 will offer more graphics and better performance than the PS4 era.

PlayStation 5 Didital Edition

Ray tracing promises accurate reflections, true-to-life lighting and dynamic environments. The PS5 promises faster loading times due to the solid-state drive (SSD), which takes over from the hard drive (HDD). The PS5 may not have a loading screen, but open-world games will feel fluid.

This means that the PlayStation Studios beloved franchises will look more real than ever.

  • The robot dinosaurs of Horizon Forbidden West are by Guerrilla Games
  • New York City is Marvel’s Spider-Man – Insomniac Games, San Mateo Studio
  • The dystopia of The Last of Us Part II is by Naughty Dog
  • Gran Turismo (Polyphony Digital) provides thrills
  • Santa Monica Studio has God of War
  • Ghost of Tsushima features a duel

Although Sony may not have the same number of studios as Microsoft (23), it does have a few more. Sony appears to be falling behind in delivering the next-generation console. It will be available for purchase in the US, Canada and Japan. We don’t yet have a launch date for India.

Sony India had posted November 19th on its website, but it was later removed. Sony apologized for pre-orders being a mess even in countries that have the PlayStation 5 released.

It promised more PS5 units but it has remained silent. Microsoft has done a better job in this regard. Not only is the Xbox Series X and Series S launching in India simultaneously with other countries, but Microsoft has done a much better job with pre-orders.

Playstation 5 Pricing

Sony will offer two new PlayStations to next-generation gamers, just like Microsoft. However, it is keeping things simple. Only the PS5 Digital Edition and the PS5 have a 4K UltraHD Blu-ray drive, while the latter does not. The PlayStation 5 starts at a much higher price than the Xbox Series. The PlayStation 5 Digital Edition is priced at

  • Rs. 39,990 in India, $450 (about Rs. 29,500 in India
  • $400 (about Rs. 34,400) in the UK
  • CA$500 (about Rs. 27600) in Canada
  • CA$500 (about Rs. 34,800) in Europe

  • NZ$650 (about R. 31,400) in New Zealand
  • Y=39.980 (about Rs. 28,000 in Japan

The PlayStation 5 is more expensive, at

  • NZ$820 (about R. 39,600 in New Zealand
  • Y=49.980 (about Rs. 35,000 in Japan.

You can see that there are no differences between the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition and the PlayStation 5. Both feature the same AMD RDNA 2 graphics unit and the 8-core AMD Zen 2 processor as the Series X or Series S.

Although the PlayStation 5 GPU clocks at 2.23GHz are faster than the Series X, it has 36% fewer compute units than the Xbox consoles. This results in a GPU power total of 10.28 teraflops. It’s lower than the 12.15 teraflops managed with the Series X. However, it’s still a close comparison since the PS5 can run at a variable frequency (GHz).

The PlayStation 5 can still run at variable frequency even with the CPU. The Xbox consoles can run at two speeds: 3.8GHz / 3.6GHz for Series X and 3.6GHz / 3.4GHz for Series S. However, the PS5 runs at 3.5GHz with simultaneous multiple threading (SMT).

Although it is not clear what will work best, it will likely vary from one situation to the next. Although the capacity of both the Series X and the PlayStation 5 is the same (16GB RAM), the PlayStation 5 has 175GB less storage on the solid-state drive (SSD).

Microsoft has announced that Series X and Series S will be able to play Dolby Vision HDR, as well as Dolby Atmos 3D sound, while gaming. Sony already has its own Tempest 3D AudioTech, but no information is available about Dolby Vision HDR support for gaming.

The only difference between the PS5 Digital Edition and the PS5 is the absence of a disc drive. The PS5 Digital Edition, as the name suggests, is digital-only. This means that you will have to purchase and download all of your games from the Internet.

Any external SSD can be used to expand the storage of your PlayStation 5 as long as it is as fast as the one in your PlayStation 5. Sony is more open than Microsoft in this area, which has partnered up with Seagate to offer an official expansion card.

The 4K Ultra HD Bluray drive makes the PS5 slightly thicker (1.2cm) and 600g heavier than the PS5 Digital Edition. Both are larger than the Xbox Series X and Series S.
DualSense controller 5

Microsoft will keep things the same with its new Xbox Wireless Controller. Sony, however, has made major changes to the PS5 Controller. The PS5 controller is now called DualSense, instead of DualShock. However, all buttons remain in the same locations as before. The touch bar has been removed, but the light bar is more prominent.

Sony will also bring haptic feedback on the DualSense, which is a new generation of technology that Microsoft introduced with its Xbox One controller. With both consoles onboard, this feature will hopefully be used by more third-party developers. DualSense’s adaptive triggers (L2 and R2) are supposed to give you a more natural feel when firing a weapon.

The DualSense controller also has a microphone and a USB port for charging. The “Share” button has been renamed to “Create”. The most obvious feature of DualSense is its black-and-white, two-tone colour scheme. This matches the console’s look.

Sony has not yet confirmed if DualSense will offer more colour options. One will be included with the PS5 or PS5 Digital Edition. DualShock 4 at Rs. is more expensive than DualSense 4, but the DualSense controller is cheaper.

If you have family or friends joining the fun, you don’t need additional controllers. DualShock 4 controllers as well as other licensed PS4 controllers work on the PS5, but not with PS4 games.

Playstation 5 Accessories

Sony will continue to support all PS4 accessories. Officially licensed arcade sticks, racing wheels, and flight sticks will all work with PS5 games. PS Move Motion Controllers, PlayStation VR Aim Controller and the PlayStation can also be used with PS VR games. PlayStation VR users will receive a PlayStation Camera adapter for their PS5.

The PlayStation 5 ships with a new PlayStation HD Camera. It can capture in full HD (1080p) and comes with an adjustable stand that allows you to attach it to your TV. The new PlayStation HD Camera can remove the background and place you in your gameplay footage just like a Zoom video chat with a virtual backdrop.

The PlayStation HD Camera is priced at

Playstation 5 or PS5 digital edition: Which one should I buy?

Two factors are key to this: Internet speed, and game sharing.

You will need to download all the games you want if you buy the PS5 Digital Edition. There is no disc slot. You will still require an Internet connection to download patches and updates, even if you have the regular PS5. The Digital Edition will require faster broadband.

With both the new PlayStation 5 consoles being able to play 4K video, game sizes will increase. As you can see, the largest games today are over 100GB. This is expected to continue as the norm, with download files increasing exponentially as we move into the next gen.

The PS5 Digital Edition cannot be shared with friends because it is digital-only. You can’t resell or play second-hand games. This is great news for game developers, but not for gamers. The used games market is a great way to save money, as both Sony and Microsoft refuse to localize Xbox and PlayStation game prices in countries like India (unlike Steam for Windows).

Also, you should look at your PS4 discs for any offers of a free upgrade to the PS5 version. You won’t be eligible to get the free upgrade to your PS4 titles if you purchase PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. Sony requires that you insert the PS4 disc into your PS5 to verify the purchase. If all of your PS4 purchases have been digital, this is not an issue.

Playstation 5 Games

While we’ve covered hardware, the most important thing about any gaming device is how you can play them.

Five PS5 games will be available from PlayStation Studios at launch. This includes

  • Spider-Man: Miles Morales and the standalone sequel
  • Vehicular combat Destruction AllStars
  • Demon’s Souls remake
  • 3D platformer Sackboy
  • Big Adventure
  • Astro’s Playroom is a complimentary 3D platformer that gives a glimpse into DualSense’s capabilities.

Spider-Man Miles Morales & Sackboy: Big Adventure are available at Rs. The prices for Demon’s Souls, Destruction AllStars, and Sackboy: A Big Adventure are respectively 3,999 and $60. The new maximum price is 4,999. Astro’s Playroom will be included with every PS5 and is completely free.

Several third-party titles will also be available for the PS5 on the Xbox Series. This includes

  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
  • Call of Duty
  • Black Ops Cold War
  • Destiny 2
  • Beyond Light
  • Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
  • Dirt 5 Fortnite
  • Marvel’s Avengers
  • Watch Dogs Legion

Sony offers 18 PS4 games in the PlayStation Plus Collection. To play these games, you’ll need a PS Plus subscription. The list includes

  • Batman
  • Arkham Knight
  • Battlefield 1
  • Bloodborne
  • Days Gone, and much more

PlayStation Plus Collection is a sort of reply to Xbox Game Pass, which provides over 100 Xbox One games and all upcoming Xbox Game Studios games. EA Play also offers more free games and trial versions for new EA titles.

Sony is working on many PlayStation Studios exclusives as we move past launch. Sony announces that the new Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart will be available in the “launch window”. Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarok are the two anticipated sequels. They will be released in 2021. Sony is also working on Gran Turismo 7, as well as Returnal, a sci-fi shooter.

Sony also manages third-party exclusives such as Final Fantasy XVI and Square Enix’s Project Athia. Also, Tango Gameworks recently acquired GhostWire Tokyo. Deathloop is from Arkane Studios, the creator of Dishonored. GhostWire Tokyo, the last, will be released in 2020. The other two are not yet available.

Playstation 5 Upgrade from PS4, PS4 Slim or PS4 Pro

We have now covered all aspects of the PS5 and some people with PS4s might be asking: Should I upgrade? It all depends on your needs.

You don’t need to immediately jump on the PS5 to get all new PlayStation 5 exclusives. PlayStation 4 will have the initial batch of PlayStation Studios PS5 titles, including Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Sackboy: Big Adventure. Horizon Forbidden West will also be available.

We are not sure how this will change beyond Horizon Forbidden West. Gran Turismo 7’s trailer (without a release date), simply states “PlayStation Exclusive”, while GhostWire Tokyo’s trailer (arriving 2021), calls it “PlayStation 5 Console Exclusive”. Third-party developers, such as Bethesda’s Tango Gameworks, are not required to continue supporting the PS4.

However, just having support doesn’t make everything better. The new Spider-Man Miles Morales will look quite different depending on whether you have a PS5, PS4 Pro or Slim. A seven-year-old console like the PS4 cannot keep up with the next-generation one that launches in November (PS5).

Although the PS4 promised full-HD gaming, it didn’t deliver on this promise in later years. Just Cause 4, Soulcalibur 6, Ace Combat 7 and Tekken 7 did not deliver native 1080p. At times, it even fell as low as 720p. These differences will be minimized if your mid-gen upgrade PS4 Pro is installed.

It was already capable of 4K and 60fps. It was capable of this on paper, though. It is not the case that most major games ever reach this number.

Dishonored 2, Fallout 4 and Uncharted 4 remain around 1440p. Middle Earth: Shadow of War, Battlefield 1 and Middle Earth: Shadow of War hover around the 1620p mark. Final Fantasy XIV manages 1800p and Sony’s The Last Guardian hits 1900p on the PS4 Pro.

Sony promises that games will run at 4K 60fps with the PlayStation 5. However, Digital Foundry discovered that many first-party Sony titles are aiming for 4K 30fps. Spider-Man: Miles Morales will be one of the few titles that can run at 4K 60fps. However, it will be labelled as an optional performance mode.

For what its value, the PS5 can stretch to 8K/120fps. To make the most of these features, you’ll need to have more advanced displays with a 120Hz refresh rate, and 8K resolution support. It must be compatible with HDMI 2.1.
