Veteran Actor “Olu Jacobs” at 80: Happy Birthday

Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, known as Olu Jacobs, was born on 11 July 1942 and is a Nollywood actor and film executive. Born to parents from Egba Alake in Ogun State, he spent his early childhood in Kano. He attended Holy Trinity School and was a member of the debating and drama societies.

He has starred in several British tv-series and international films. Olu Jacobs has made his mark in Nigeria’s movie industry, Nollywood.

With more than 40 years of acting experience, Jacobs is a bridge between the old and new breed of Nollywood actors. Olu Jacobs has distinguished himself as a godfather in the Nigerian movie industry, paving a successful path for many emerging actors and actresses.

The late legendary filmmaker inspired Olu Jacobs’s love for acting. Hubert Ogunde’s annual concert party was held at Colonial Hotel in Kano; after that, Jacobs travelled to England, where he studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London.

On television, he was a cast member in TVS’s The Witches and the Grinnygog. Olu Jacobs has subsequently starred in over 120 Nollywood films. He is considered one of the top Nigerian Nollywood actors.

Olu Jacobs has been described as ‘one of Nollywood’s finest actors, best role interpreter, and manipulator of words.’ For Jacobs’s dedication to his acting career spanning over five decades, he was honoured with the Industry Merit Award for outstanding achievements in acting at the 2013 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards.’

Olu Jacobs Personal Wife

Olu Jacobs has been married to Nollywood actress Joke Silva since 1989. She is Miss Joke Silva, who is Mrs Joke Jacobs. It is as simple as that. They have children. When she is working, she is Joke Silva, but Mrs Joke Jacobs when she’s at home.

Rumour had it that Olu Jacobs died in 2021, but he attended Afriff in November 2021, where he won the Lifetime Achievement Award. His wife, Joke Silva, revealed his health condition in an interview with Chude Jideonwo that he is battling dementia with a Lewy body.

Jacobs’s wife, Joke Silva, has opened up concerning her husband’s and fellow actor’s health condition.

In an interview, She revealed that her husband has been battling Dementia with Lewy body (DLB) for a couple of years.

“He is dealing with issues and it has been going on for a couple of years. It is known as dementia with Lewy Body. It is a degenerative disease that affects the brain and it is almost like a Parkinson’s type of disease, it affects the brain so you don’t see the shaking. It affects the person,” she said.

“It is the first time I said that publicly. I knew the time will come that it has to be known.”

The veteran actress also spoke about the effect of her husband’s health on herself and her family members.

“It’s been hard on him because he doesn’t understand what is going on and on family members. We have gone through it over the past couple of years, and we thank God.

“We have gone through some times and situations recently that I wish I had the old you here so I don’t battle these times on my own but we are grateful for the moment of clarity. I miss the times we worked together,” she added.

Olu Jacobs was seen publicly at Africa International Film Festival Awards (AFRIFF) in Lagos, looking frail. The veteran actor recently won a lifetime achievement award at the Africa International Film Festival Awards in Lagos.

After sharing a picture of himself with his award on his Instagram page, many fans congratulated him and expressed concern about his frail look.

Olu Jacobs has been hailed by many as one of his generation’s greatest and most widely respected African actors.
